Inspiring Curiosity, Building Success

School Library

Reading for pleasure is an important key focus for us at Denmead Junior School, we want ALL children to leave us with a real love of books and reading.

Library picture

We have created a fantastic reading environment in our school library to help nurture a love of reading. There are a wide range of books for the children to choose from and comfy areas (mats, cushions and seating) for them use while reading. One section of the library is dedicated to fiction books and the other section to non-fiction.

OUR LIBRARIAN

Mrs Davis is our School Librarian. She has dedicated time to help keep our library well stocked, resourced and inviting for all of the children

LIBRARY TIME

All children have weekly library time. During this time they select books to take home to read for pleasure. The sessions are also used to encourage the children to learn library skills, so they know how to use the library effectively and know how to find the books they are looking for.

To find out more about how you can help to encourage a love of reading, please have a look at the World Book Day Hub for Families webpage for ideas, activities, reading lists and more.

All children are encouraged to use the reading app BoomReader as the expectation is to read 5 times with an adult per week.

Opening up the Library for Parent/Carer reading with your children

In order to give children and parents/carers an opportunity to engage with reading on a regular basis, we are opening up our school library as a facility for you to read and participate in book talk with your children. The doors will open at 8.30am until registration on a Wednesday morning, to give you the opportunity to read with your children before school. A teacher will be on hand to support you with anything that you might need. There will also be Ipads available for logging reads on Boom Reader and to access online books on SORA.

In addition to the Wednesday morning session, there will also be a session on a Friday after school from 3.15pm to 3.45pm. Again, this is a drop in session for parents/carers to read with their children with support from a teacher if they need it.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or carer during these sessions.
